Should I Invest In My Market?

I have just started learning everything there is to know about rental property investing. I have done some research regarding rental market in my area. I notice that many properties are left vacate for months without being filled. Is this a sign that I should not invest in my local market and maybe should invest in other near by towns where there are many other investors invest there even though there will be lots of competition? Thanks in advance
