Looking for rental in/around Richmond, VA

I am currently looking for a place to rent in or around the Richmond, VA area. I am getting transferred there at the end of May and so far my housing search has been a bust. Every apartment complex I look at has gotten terrible reviews. I am looking for a safe/clean & manageable place to live with my toddler and girlfriend. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated. I am currently looking on property management sites and other sites like Zillow, Trulia, and Apartments.com.
