How to communicate effectively with upset tenants

Aimee Brandner
Posted

I have been doing this 18 years, and never seen a group so full of rage. After a couple major breaches in their lease, and my wanting to reassess the now month to month agreement, my 18-26 year old tenants keep threatening to bring me to court over things. Things I didn’t even do that they assumed I would, how do you get a sue happy tenant to see thru the red?

@Aimee Brandner, I agree with @Wesley W. that once things deteriorate to that point they likely won't improve. I would give them their notice since they are month to month and move on.

I'm not sure how you addressed the issues leading up to this. I really don't let myself get upset about what happens with tenants no matter how bad it gets. By staying calm it helps to keep communication from breaking down. However, in some cases tenants will not see reason and will not accept responsibility for their actions. So, nothing works 100% of the time.
