Ways to rent a townhome

Hello BP community!

I am considering purchasing a townhome when I move next year. I have my sights set on the D.C./Baltimore suburb area. Have anyone ever owned a townhome and rented it out while living there? Did you have a 4 or 5-level townhome that you could convert a couple of the floors into mini-apartments? Roommates/Tenantmates?
