I have a two family rental in upstate NY. The tenant is moving out Thursday May 31st and has requested the security deposit back on that day however Im out of town and will be out for another 8 days and she is having a fit. Can you tell me what is the time frame in NY for returning the security deposit?

Not a lawyer and don't know NJ law, but a quick googling says 30 days. Here in CO, its 30 days, but you can go up to 60 if your lease specifically states a limit. What does you lease say?

I would never give it back on the day they moved out. I would simply remind them of what's in the lease and ask for a forwarding address. Who knows what you might find when you start looking around.
