Tenant sue landlord over security deposit

Being sued by former tenant for not returning security deposit. Part of the deposit was actually sent by certified letter but never claimed and returned back. After month and the half sent another one. Tenant claimed the letter and check but disagree with amount. I still need to respond summons. What's your experience and suggestions?
