How to collect rent from ex-tenant?

Hey BP, I just wanted to pick a few brains to see what's the best approach to recovering rent from an ex-tenant. The tenant broke their lease and left 3 months early and has not paid. Has anyone had any luck or is it just a waste of time and money?
