Black mold found but not during inspection

Ellen A.
Posted

We found out today we have Black mold in one of our properties. The inspection was done in February and there is NO mention of it. We live in Texas.  We were interested in another home but when we found out it had mold we stopped pursuing it.

What are the law or requirements for inspectors to look for and reveal if mold is found in the house?

Thanks for your feedback!

How do you know the mold existed back in February?

Where is the mold located? If it's in a bathroom, it's probably more likely caused by the tenant failing to properly ventilate.

Educate yourself on mold. It's everywhere, even in the air you breath outside in the country. Mold requires two things: moisture and a food source (typically dust). It can easily be stopped by removing the source of moisture and cleaning.

Even if you have "black mold" all that tells you is there is mold and it is black in color. It doesn't necessarily mean it's dangerous or that the house is from the pit of Hell.

If you're not good at educating yourself, contact a mold remediation company and hire them to come inspect and remedy. They can teach you at the same time so you can avoid this in the future.

For anyone that is a Landlord: mold is one of the most common methods tenants attempt to break their lease or extort you for money. Educate yourself and be prepared to deal with these complaints quickly.
