House-Hacking a Duplex vs. Room-Renting a Large SFH

Hello BP Community!

I am just starting looking in to REI, and am curious about renting out rooms vs renting out units. From what I can gather, I could buy a relatively large SFH for the same price as a relatively small duplex, which means that if the laws allowed and it was legal, if I was renting out rooms, I would potentially make more money than renting out a unit in a duplex. Anyone have thoughts on renting rooms instead of renting units?

@Nathan Gesner That does makes sense. It sounds like as a first investment it might make be more reasonable to look for entire units to rent. I will keep doing more homework, as I am looking in an area about 20 minutes from 2 major schools. Thanks for the input!
