Security deposit - didn’t get it back.

So I moved in with a couple friends back in July. We went three ways on the security deposit ($300 a piece) and signed a six month lease. I didn’t resign but the other two did and someone new took my place. I didn’t bail on the lease and gave our landlord plenty of notice.  Now I asked for my security deposit back and they tell me because one of the other roommates is the security deposit holder I need to get it from him. Me and him agreed that the new roommate should pay me and take over the security deposit. It’s been over a month now and I honestly don’t think he’s going to pay me. What are my options here? Small claims court? Or should the leasing company have to give it back? Maybe There’s some information someone can share that’d be helpful. Thanks in advance.

@Jeffrey Maguire generally the security deposit stays with the landlord until all parties vacate. You would have to go after the person who took your spot.
