Bad experience with Landlord

My outside fan quit working. A tech came out today and replaced the fan motor. A couple of hours later my thermostat started smoking and burnt up melting the plastic and leaving a mark on the wall. The tech did call an HVAC 24-hour emergency service they wired the new fan motor. The owner said it was wired to code with the wires sticking up out of the cage? Anyhow, could the new fan motor in any way be related to the smoke thermostat?
