Replacing faulty appliances in rentals

My question is this... We rented a lil farm house in MOndovi Wisconsin about 3 months ago. When we moved in landlord had provided a refrigerator/freezer only to have it break down right after we filled it with groceries. He sent someone to fix it thou it has broken down again and now says we have to buy another.
How can it be our responsibility to fix/replace when he placed a used refrigerator there in the first place?
