How long does it take to hear from house owner?

So my friends and I are in college, and found a townhouse for next year. Three of us put in applications and paid the app fee. We were the first to turn it in. It's been about a week and we haven't heard from the owner, I emailed the tenant who lives there now to see if he heard from him, and he hasn't and were both just waiting now. I'm wondering when most people hear from owners of a house to rent? Any suggestions?
