Bought a multi with tenants, need a new lease before removing?

I just closed on a 4 plex that came with 3 tenants. They have a lease with the previous owner but it’s already expired. In Michigan, it defaults to Month to Month. I was going to issue a 60 days notice to 2 of the tenants but someone in my circle told me that I needed to sign them to new leases in my name before I can issue a notice to vacate. Is that true? And if it is, am I able to sign a new lease and issue a 60 days notice simultaneously?
