Landlord has gone MIA
This is an interesting situation but it is also going to be a great learning experience for when I’m going to be a property owner.
I currently rent in San Diego and I pay my rent to a property management group, however, I am assigned a property manager (not on-site) that I can contact if I have questions. On August 18 I am ending my lease so I can rent a room instead of an apartment to save money and pay down debt so I can be in the best position for homeownership next year.
Two weeks ago, I emailed my prop. manager that I am going to end my lease. I did not get a response, so I called him and the number is no longer in service. I called the prop. management co. and every number shown on their website, and all the numbers are not working.
This past weekend, I drove to the place to drop off my letter but it was not open (btw it’s usually open on Saturday), so I dropped the letter off in the rent mailbox and wrote on the letter to email or call me to confirm they have received my notice to vacate. I still have not received any communication from anyone.
I am going to move forward with my move, thoroughly clean my apartment and pay to have the carpet cleaned. I’ll take pictures of course prior to my departure but what else can I do to protect myself? I’m not sure if they are even in business anymore? I feel bad for the actual owner because I doubt they even know.
