Is there a way to run a free (or cheaper) criminal check?

NTN is charging $20 for national criminal background check, and $25 total for the other checks (credit, evict, etc.). That's why I had my app fee so high in the beginning.

Does anyone know of a reliable way to do the criminal for free, or cheaper?
