Apartment landlord took 300 in cash from me

i went in to apply for this apartment building she said her computer was down and I gave her my security deposite in money order she said there was a 300 dollar holding fee she said cash was ok I was stupid and did not get a receipt she told me I had been accepted but then they told me I did not make enough I told them she took 300 in cash from me and now she's saying she did not do that. They are doing an investigation they said does anyone know what I should do
