Landlord law about taking money:
Hey everyone; my name's Jerome. I'm new here. Anyway my landlord basically was charging me $675 for the room I lived in before and then he made me an offer to move out to the patio outside so I can save $100 - $200. So I did and when we were building the room; Chris asked me to wash the tarps, wash the 6 cloth canvases he supposedly had, but I only found 4; he said I lost the other 2. And he later asked me to pay for 2 new $90 canvases, and even sweep the patio underneath the deck. I did all of that and even moved my furnature out there while moving his old rotting furnature from the patio, including a heavy TV that fell onto my leg, causing it to swell up. Chris didn't lift a finger.
Afterward my payee showed up, giving him an over-payment of $735 (my whole SSI check). She expected him to give me the change leftover since my rent is now only $600, so I should have $135 leftover after rent.
Even though I paid $65 - $135 I still have $70 left over.
And when I appaoched him about it he said he's give me the change tommarow. I said he could just give me a $100 bill and I could go to the store and split it into $10s.
But he doesn't want to do that with "his money" even though it's my SSI money. -.- After that he asked me "what do you need to spend your money on that's so important?" I told him: "Why do I have to answer when it's simply my money?"
Then he said he doesn't trust me with "his money" and we had an argument; now I'm not sure if he'll pay me; he owed me $25 last month from rent and didn't give that to me yet and took that off from the canvases I bought him.
What does the law say about this; is it illegal?
