5 day notice served to tenant's adult son, is this ok?

My tenant is late for January and I had my dad hand deliver a 5 day notice since he was going to be in the area anyway, its an hour away. The tenant's adult son, who has the same name as my tenant, answered the door and my dad gave him the notice. Is this going to be ok or does the the tenant himself need to be served? If I can get the tenant to acknowledge the notice via email or text will that help my case?

Lesson learned, I bought the property a couple months ago and haven't driven out there to have the tenants sign a new lease yet, shame on me. Otherwise the adult son would be on the lease, which he currently isn't.
