The appartments where I live dont want to renew my lease because my husband is an iligal immigrant, why one year ago that wasnt an issue? So I have 60 days to move out and find a new place for us and our kids! I am concerned because when I move here everything went well but now this, that wasnt in our plans! Is this even lega! I am legal so are my kids we are on the contract they even said "well your husband has to move out than" how does that makes sence!! Alot of appartemts are getting empty for the same reason! And knowing that I loved this place And now I am beeing ckicked  out of it! 😞 Just need some opinions and advice! Even though  I am pretty sure there is nothing to do I am still praying for a miracle!

I think this could be related to our political climate.

It is risky to rent to illegal immigrants, because they have a higher risk of disappearing in the middle of the night.  Losing their right to work, getting deported, etc.  With Trump getting elected and his views on immigration this risk is higher.  It might not be anything related to how you are as a tenant, just that the risk level changed.  I know employers can get in huge trouble for hiring employees who don't have the right to work, and the rules have gotten stricter.  I have not heard of any fines or consequences for landlords.  But an abandoned unit is costly to a landlord.

We have been renting to an undocumented family for over two years.  It has been a good experience and we've said we would do it again.  The next year will be a time of uncertainty, until we find out how drastic changes will be, and landlords are likely nervous about having any or a majority of illegals.

We did do some things to help reduce our risk.  We have a co-signer, who can help with financial losses and also help reduce the amount of time the unit sits empty (going through the abandonment process).  We also collected a double deposit.

As you look for a new place, you could offer either or both of those items to set yourself apart.  You could also approach your current landlord to see if either of these items could keep you in your current home.  If you qualify individually you could also ask that you be on the lease/agreement and your husband only be listed as an authorized occupant.  As long as the criminal record is clean this might be an option.  I hope you find something, my heart goes out to you.
