How to Find Out If Property Management is Doing Their Job?

I just received wind from a tenant stating that there's a plumbing issue at my SFR and that getting a hold of property management is nearly impossible. I only know about this because the tenant is related to a friend of mine, and it came up in conversation. Other than that, I never would have known about this. How can an investor ensure that the property management company they hired is truly managing the property? I don't want to have angry tenants and I want my investment to be taken care of. Any advice would be appreciated.
