Property manager - live in plus pay?

Hey BP, I have yet to purchase; putting my plan together. Not sure if I will use a property management company or what but I'm curious: After reading 7 years to 7 figures, it occurred to me that I could possibly just offer a free apartment to someone that will manage the property for me! Is it customary to just give away an apartment, without paying the person, to take care of your property? Or should I add on a salary? Thanks MC
