Renting out an un-permitted unit

I'm in Los Angeles area and interested to buy a multi-family 4unit property, the one I'm looking for has a 5th unit which is un-permitted and tenant occupied. Anyone know if there is any consequences of renting out the unpermitted unit?

To answer your question, the consequences of renting out an unpermitted unit can be quite dramatic. From a legal aspect, if something occurs such as fire, injury or worse, you have no legal defense. Why risk your future when you should be doing something the smart way.
