Furniture damaged floor

I just moved out of a house I was renting with a friend. The landlord did not require us to pay a security deposit.

After moving out we discovered my couch had scratched the hardwood floors. The landlord is pissed and although he was present when we put the couch in, and the couch never moved from its spot until I moved out, he wanted to know why I didn't put pads under it...had I known the floor could get damaged from it I would have but the thought never occurred to me, or him either apparently.

He wants me to pay for the replacement of (hopefully only) the damaged wood panels.

While I have no problem taking responsibility for anything that is my fault I am unsure if this is my fault and he can make me pay for it OR if it is considered normal wear & tear from living. And also can he legally have me pay for it even though he did not require or collect a security deposit?
