Bogus mechanical lien

Being threatened with a mechanical lien for work I never had a written contract for, an estimate or anything. Individual was recently let go for poor performance and now sends me a bill for 1,000. Any thoughts as to how to make sure this gets squashed? Thanks Guys. Have already gotten a lawyer in the works so- one step ahead there. But, in terms of legality- what right does someone have to say that any work done on a place was requested if there is no signed contract? Thanks team! P
