Underwriter requiring $300k in renters insurance--too much?

I am rehabbing a house that should appraise in the $140-145K range after renovations. The underwriter for our homeowner's insurance is requiring renters to have a renters insurance policy for no less than $300k in liabilities.

Does this seem steep to you? Which insurance companies do you use and what are their policies on renters insurance?

I have 300 on all of mine.  Umbrella insurers want 500K on the underlying policies - and some of my policies won't write that.  Liability is for events not property.
