in need of serious help

Hello all,

Today I was scheduled to move into a house and rent a room on a month to month basis. I had been in contact w/ landlord for the past month or so regarding the place and was delayed because of credit check etc. Anyway today I get to the place and meet up w/ him. He tells me that he's in a big rush because he has someone moving into his other house. I go up and look at the room and there is still some items from previous tenant in the room including a hamper filled w/ dirty laundry. the walk in closet i was promised also had boxes and boxes in it. He tells me that one of his tenants was to clean the place out and would finish tonight. ALso he didn't have a key to the house made for me and said it was also responsibility of tenant. so I hand him a cashiers check for $1200 (memo: june rent & sec. deposit) and he leaves. As I move my stuff in I become more and more dissastisfied, the direct tv i was promised doesn't work, half the electrical outlets dont work and the smoke detectors dont work. Plus tthere are wires hanging all over the place and it seems a generally unssafe place. I call him back to voice my concerns and he was very nasty w/ me and said 'you want your money back? I'll give you your money back'. I said yes and then 20 minutes later after most of my stuff is back in the car, he calls again and says he won't give me my money just sec. deposit and would keep 600 for June. I said no I would like it all back and he wouldn't budge. Now he won't even answer his phone. I signed no lease or agreement. What am I entitled to here and what would be my best course of action??
