background checks

I tried my first background check tonight through a company online.  After dropping 40 bucks for a complete background (criminal and financial), all I get are several addresses where the subject lived.  So I click over to the courts section, and it just says they checked the counties of residence, and none of the courts have databases online.  Then it offers to hire a runner for an extra 40 bucks for each county.  Well that was a bunch of nothing.  So I can spend another 120 bucks to have someone go to these courthouses and type in a name.  Otherwise, my comprehensive background check was little more than a free people search for addresses.  What companies do you use, and do you actually get useful info?  Thanks
