Denying a potential tenant

Do you have to tell a potential tenant that they are being denied after they filled out an application?  Or can you just not contact them?  Just of the mind that the less contact the better in this litigious society.  Thanks for the answers!

I want to post for this because I am new to BiggerPockets. We just bought a SFH and closed then immediately posted it for rent. We received around 8 prospects the first day of showing and qualified them. I verified references, employment history, credit check through a service cozy.co which helped me feel more secure in the process but This was a real concern of mine. I was relieved to have decided on the applicant qualified but dreaded the process of denial notification. Reading through these posts helped me realize that ripping the bandaid off fast was the best way. I formed a text message stating short and sweet "I am notifying you asap that another applicant has been approved for the home. I appreciate your interest in our home and wish them luck on their future home search." It was met with respectful and appreciative responses. Thanks Everyone who shared what they do!
