Asking for Applicant's Other Names on Rental Application

On a rental application is it legal to ask what other names an applicant has been known by (for example, maiden names) and how should that question be phrased? No doubt the answers won't always be true and complete, but it won't hurt to ask. Do you ask applicants this question and have you found it to be useful to do so?
