Self help eviction penalties

It's OK to have a discussion about this, right?

Most of the information regarding self help evictions indicates landlord should not do this under any circumstances. Squatters and non-paying, property destroying tenants get all the help they can to remain for what in some cases can be years. Some tenants even refuse to accept large amounts of cash for keys.

Does anyone know of landlords who have gone to jail and or paid fees for locking the tenants out? If so, how much in fees have landlords actually had to pay?

Just wondering if there are ways around letting an eviction play out.
