Here's a step-by-step guide on how to clean mold from a shower:

Step 1: Preparation

  • Make sure the bathroom is well-ventilated. Open a window or turn on the exhaust fan to allow fresh air to circulate.

Step 2: Safety

  • Put on rubber gloves and, if you're sensitive to mold, safety goggles or a mask.

Step 3: Remove Items

  • Take out any items or toiletries from the shower to access all the affected areas.

Step 4: Dry Brushing

  • Start by using a dry scrubbing brush to loosen and remove any loose mold or mildew on the shower walls and grout. This helps prevent spreading mold spores when you apply the cleaning solution.

Step 5: Apply Cleaning Solution

  • Choose one of the following solutions:
    • Vinegar: Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and spray it directly onto the moldy areas. Allow it to sit for at least 10-15 minutes.
    • Hydrogen Peroxide: Alternatively, you can use hydrogen peroxide in the same way as vinegar. It's particularly effective for killing mold and mildew.

Step 6: Scrub

  • Use a scrubbing brush or an old toothbrush to scrub the moldy areas vigorously. Be sure to scrub the grout lines and any corners where mold tends to hide.

Step 7: Rinse

  • Rinse the shower walls and grout thoroughly with water. You can use a detachable showerhead or a bucket of water to do this. Make sure all cleaning solution and mold residue are washed away.

Step 8: Baking Soda or Borax Paste (Optional)

  • For stubborn mold stains or to prevent mold from coming back, you can create a paste by mixing baking soda or borax with a small amount of water. Apply the paste to the affected areas and scrub gently. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse it off with water.

Step 9: Preventive Measures

  • To prevent mold from returning, ensure your bathroom is well-ventilated. Use an exhaust fan or open a window during and after showers to reduce humidity. Periodically clean your shower to prevent mold growth.

Step 10: Dry

  • Wipe down the shower walls and any remaining moisture with a towel or cloth. Leave the shower door or curtain open to allow it to air dry completely.

Regular cleaning and maintenance will help prevent mold from returning in the future. If the mold problem is severe or widespread, you may need to consult a professional for remediation. Additionally, ensure that the bathroom is adequately waterproofed to prevent moisture from seeping behind the walls, as this can also contribute to mold growth.
