What to do with swimming pool?

Hi, We are looking at properties with 100+ units. Many of them have swimming pools but have been poorly maintained and don't seem to be utilized. Does anyone have experience in this area? Is it typically an option to shut then down permanently? How else can the space be utilized? How do you determine if the swimming pool is critical to being competitive? Any thoughts or advice is appreciated!
