Basement Rental Unit PG County, Maryland

Hi all!

My husband and I are considering turning the basement in our house into a long-term rental and I'm having a hard time finding a definitive answer about whether PG county allows them or not. The PG county website has the following language: "Basements or portions of basements shall not be used for bedrooms or as a habitable space unless authorized by the Enforcement Division of the Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement."

Does anyone have any experience with getting said authorization? What does it entail?

Additionally, I found some zoning changes that were proposed in 2015 that would allow ADUs in the county but I can't seem to find any information about what passed and what didn't. Any and all insights are welcome.

Thank you,

Alejandra

ADU's are not allowed in PG County. You can not rent an entire basement on its own. If a basement bedroom is legal, you can rent out the bedroom to a border like any other bedroom. Egress window and 7 foot ceilings are required.
