Possible abandoned property procedure in CA

After 5 years+ my tenants have given their 30-day Notice.

They have had items stored outside under a patio the entire time.  I am concerned that they may leave these items behind for me to deal with.   Is there any proactive action I can take to highly discourage this abandonment or will I have to take the steps for abandoned property?  ( tenant notification, newspaper notice, and public sale )

What can the landlord do if  there are items left over from the sale?
