Water Sub-metering, How Do I Do It Remotely?

Hi there!

I'm wondering if anyone has used sub-meters on a multi-unit property.  I'd like to sub-meter the water to bill accordingly instead of just splitting the water bill down the middle (for two existing units).  Has anyone done this with success?  Does it take a drive by every other month to check the meters for each billing cycle?  Any feedback on your experience, good or bad, with sub-metering is greatly appreciated.
