Updating Older Homes for Newer Codes

Hello,

I recently bought a property in Indiana built in the 1930's. The property has been fairly well maintained with updated plumbing and electrical. When I had the home inspected he said he only checked if it met the standards for the era it was built. If newer building codes have been put into place since then...am I required to change them before I rent it or is it "grandfathered in". My main concern is the staircase to the basement. The tread depths are small (7 1/2") compared with todays standards (11-12"). Hate for somebody to fall. Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Neal
