IRA to Self Directed IRA

I have an IRA through my employer that he matches and deposits an annual bonus into every year.

I'm wondering what are the implications of transferring it into a self directed IRA? Is that something I can do even though it's set up through my employer and he still contributes to it? Are there any fees or taxes that would be incurred by making this particular transaction?
