Referral for a contractor in Los Angeles for ground-up construction

Hi, my wife and I are building a spec home in Silverlake California. We have plans and have started bidding it out to a few contractors. The architect we are working with recommended a couple of companies they have used in the past, but we would love to get some bids from contractors that have done great work but aren't necessarily a part of a huge company, where it feels we are going to spend more than we are hoping. Has anybody worked with anyone on a groundup build in Los Angeles and had a great experience with someone they trust and could recommend? Thank you in advance for your help.
