Hello, I'm just starting out and looking for a real estate-focused, investor-friendly CPA.  Any referrals/recommendations in the Northern New Jersey area?  Thanks in advance.

    Hello Cynthia, all good questions! I believe @Jonathan Greene and his team serve that area and are extremely experienced. Jonathan has been on the BP podcast and knows his stuff! Good luck on your search!

    You might not need that for a while, but it is a smart decision to set the base of your future on the accounting side. If you don't have any properties yet, you can learn form the forums and at meetups (we have them once a month in-person in Northern NJ) what to start with before you find an accountant.

    Cynthia, hi. You've come to the right place! We are a community of real estate investors and 20+ active CPAs here in Biggerpockets. Make sure to reach out to a tax advisor with real estate experience as location is not an issue these days. Preferably contact them by e-mail as we are not allow to self promote in this forum.

    NJ has one of the more complex tax issues in the country. You may want to consider working with an accountant who is based in the tri-state area who is familiar with NJ clients.

    Furthermore, you created a post in the past regarding a hybrid MTR / STR property. Just be mindful from a tax perspective that if the average stay is mroe than 7 days, it basically is considered a passive property for tax purposes.

    @Cynthia Jefferson

    I recommend finding an accountant specializing in real estate taxation. You may want to consider working with your accountant remotely to expand your options.

    I would also recommend looking for a tax strategist willing to work with you throughout the year, not just when preparing your tax return.

    You want an accountant who can help you strategize and who is responsive when you want to know the tax consequences of the financial decisions you are making throughout the year.

    Good luck.
