Purchasing rentals under an LLC?

I have heard of people putting their rentals into an LLC to protect them in cases of egregious lawsuits where the plaintiffs can potentially take over your rentals. Does anyone purchase property and transfer to a LLC? Do you then create sub LLC's for future rentals?
