Kacey - sorry to hear of you family's loss. Dealing with the loss of anyone that's close, related or not, is tough enough without having to deal with their estate matters.

Here in the States, there are attorneys (solicitors and barristers) who focus primarily on probate estate and trust matters, in addition to those who have a more general practice. Laws vary widely from State to State in the U.S., however most laws are loosely based upon English common law. Yet, anything that may work here may not work downunder.

Your Brother's solicitor will likely know what is required for administration of an intestate estate and will also have knowledge of local estate agents (Realtors) and other expert resources.

I have not been to your town but I do know my way around Melbourne, from St Kildas, to Bomb Beach, the Dandenongs and the downtown courts. If you get in a pinch, I have an estate agent friend from Melbourne who does nothing but probate in California. I'm certain he's good for a referral or two.
