What can I claim on taxes

Chandler Woodley
Posted

I just bought a house that I’m planning on renting out but it has a few things I need/want to fix up. If I buy things like doors, wood, rocks and paint can I claim that on my taxes? Also my property is about 2 hours away from me can I claim the gas I pay for on my taxes as well?Finally, do y’all know of any good preferably free apps that I can scan my recipes and file them so it’s easier when it comes down to claiming everything I bought come tax season? Thanks In Advance!

@Chandler Woodley

It sounds like the property has not been placed in service.

If it has been placed in service, and I encourage you to talk to your CPA about when you can put rental real estate into service, your ability to "write off" items incurred becomes a lot more flexible.

"Also my property is about 2 hours away from me can I claim the gas I pay for on my taxes as well?"

If the trip is 100% business, yes.  Actual expenses (which requires more tracking and attention to detail) or the standard mileage rate.

"Finally, do y’all know of any good preferably free apps that I can scan my recipes and file them so it’s easier when it comes down to claiming everything I bought come tax season?"

Not off the top of my head...but these ones look nice.  ; )
