Filing and Charging Sales Taxes re Lodging Tax Returns

Hi guys - anybody have any experiences from a state or municipality requesting a lodging tax return to be filed? It's primarily used for more transient type rentals (airbnb etc), but how many people have experience completing these forms? Also, how strict are the states/municipalities in enforcing these returns?
