Homestead exemption removal

Hey bp family so I recently got approved for my homestead exemption on my double but a few days ago I got a letter stating that they were removing it because it had came to their attention that both sides of the double was being used as rental property cause I was supposed to be staying on one side and renting the other I was gonna call them and say I recently moved out that side but I really didn’t wanna call them and push the issue and make it any worse... Can anyone explain to me how they could have found this out and any further action I should take????
