PM sued for security deposit

My colleague owns a property management company, and he has been sued by a tenant who wants his security deposit returned.  The owner of the property instructed the PM to keep and send him the deposit because the tenant did not report a leak that caused $8k in damages. The tenant sued the PM only, he did not sue the out of state investor.  Has anyone experienced something similar?
