I was told by my funds managing company that the company I work for won't let me do a self directed ira, is that true or did I get bad info?

@Reggie Maggard

I don't have enough info to fully answer your question.

Are you in a 401k plan that is offered by your current employer? If so, then that cannot likely be rolled over to a self-directed IRA.

Or, are you speaking about an IRA you have with an investment firm and the fact that they do not offer self-direction? If so, then yes, that is quite common. The mainstream firms offering IRA accounts are strictly focused on what they sell, which is publicly traded stocks, bonds & funds. Specialty providers offer self-directed IRA plans. You would need to be able to transfer or rollover your funds to a different IRA in order to be able to take advantage of this option.
