Property Tax in Whittier, CA
Evening all,
I closed an escrow on a duplex in Whittier about a month ago. Friends have warned me that property tax is one of the big annual expenses that cannot be overlooked, so I'd like to be prepared.
I called LA county office of the assessor and learned that since the escrow was closed in May and the current tax year does not end until the end of June, I have to pay the "supplemental tax", an amount to reflect the difference in property value for the remaining tax year (please correct me if I am wrong).
Does that mean this supplemental tax can be avoided if I closed the escrow on 7/1/2016?
Also the assessor told me that the property tax rate in Whittier, CA is 1.25%, and the county office will use 2% appreciation annually to calculate property tax. Does this sound about right?
