Mortgage Company Blues

I paid off a mortgage in 05 (one year ago). About a month ago the mortgage company sent me a letter saying I owed them $1400 because they inadvertly applied someone elses payment to my account in 05. They said the payoff figures included this credit. Do I have to send them the $1400 or is it their mistake and their lost? Not sure what to do. Don't want to damage my credit.
