Screening prospective tenants

I advertise my posting on Zillow and Craigslist. Due to a high number of inquiries, I'm screening all potential tenants prior to showing the home by asking them their income, credit score, pets and if they have been evicted. I don't want to waste my time with people who wouldn't qualify anyway. One of the people told me I was violating equal housing laws by asking those questions. I didn't think I was but wanted to make sure.
